Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a second generation of its GLK luxury SUV and given it a new identity.
The newly dubbed GLC will be a model year 2016 vehicle and will go on sale in November of this year, the German automaker said.
The new name reflects the five-seat SUV's close DNA connection to the C Class sedans. It shares a power train and some interior appointments with the C300.
The GLC will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 214 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, the company said. Future versions, available in 2016 and 2017, will include other engine options.
The engine will be paired with the company's nine-speed, 4MATIC all-wheel-drive transmission, which will offer Comfort, Eco, Sport and Sport+ settings, and a nine-speed rear-wheel-drive transmission.
Mercedes is touting its off-road capabilities, while also underlining the elegance of its interior design and the safety features included in a suite of driver-assist programs.
Though the cargo space and overall size of the vehicle are larger than GLK, the vehicle is 176 pounds lighter than its predecessor.
Compared to the boxy, squared-off GLK, the GLC is sleeker, with softer, more rounded lines.
Thanks to work done by Mercedes' engineers on what they call the GLC's "psycho-acoustic properties," it's also quieter than the GLK.
The new GLC joins the GLA SUV, M Class SUV, GL SUV and the coming GL Couple in the Mercedes crossover line.
In size and price, it is the company's second-smallest and least expensive SUV, after the GLA. It is designed to compete with the similarly sized and similarly priced Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.
No MSRP has been set, but the company said the vehicle would be priced comparably to the GLK -- somewhere in the neighborhood of $40,000, depending on options.
